Press Release - Rod and Bev Cameron, April
2005
Rod and Bev met at Mahoning Valley Christian
Service Camp, Rushville, IN, in the summer of ’51 and were married in
May 1954. The 50s were Happy Days but very busy. Rod graduated from
Louisville Bible College, May 1955. They started Lyndon Christian
Church, summer of 1954. He had preaching ministries at Mt. Zion
Christian church, Litchfield, KY; Mt. Carmel Christian church,
Campbellsburg, IN; Pleasant Grove church, Flat Rock, IN; Fountaintown
church, Fountaintown, IN; Big Rock church, Big Rock, KY. He taught 7th
grade at Mountain Mission School, Grundy, VA. They went as missionaries
to Southern Rhodesia (Zimbabwe) to the Zambezi Valley in 1959. Their
three children were all born in the 50s. Mark:7-11-56, Myrna:12-31-58,
Bruce:12-7-59.
They returned from Africa in 1966 and then managed
Pearson’s Mill Christian Assembly (Rainbow Christian Camp) from
1967—2003 until retirement. Bev worked at Rod’s side as Executive
Secretary and was known for her unusual organizational ability and sweet
spirit. Rod admittedly would not have amounted to much without her.
Rod is an internationally known Christian
ventriloquist of professional ability, using his dummy Gabriel Jeremiah
Cameron (Gabby), a wooden dummy purchased by 4 men of the Fountaintown
church and Oscar, a stupid python hand-puppet made by Bev. They have
presented programs in 20 states and in 1991 did a cross-cultural tour
around the world, presenting programs in New Zealand, Australia and
Zimbabwe. They have been on TV and Radio and were featured five times in
the late Dr. George Crane’s “Worry Clinic,” a nationally syndicated
newspaper column. Rod has written two autobiographical books: “A Dummy
Goes to Africa” and “A Dummy Goes to Church Camp.” He has produced an
audio tape: “A Dummy with an Attitude.” The last two are available for
$5.00 plus postage.
